Corporate Governance

Trevali's Board of Directors and Management are committed to the highest standard of corporate governance and monitor changing rules, regulations and best practices on a continuing basis. The Company's business and operating practices are stated in the Code of Business Conduct & Ethics, which is applicable to all directors, officers and employees. The Code establishes a set of expectations and standards for the Company and its personnel with respect to ethical business practices, personal conduct, environmental, safety and occupational health practices, competition and fair dealings, and disclosure of information.

Trevali has also adopted a Reporting and Investigation Policy, and has partnered with ClearView Connects to provide a confidential incident reporting hotline, in order to provide an avenue for representatives to raise concerns with respect to actual or potential violations of law, regulations or company policy and to ensure that any concerns are acted upon appropriately.

Ricus Grimbeek

Ricus Grimbeek is an experienced mining executive with nearly 30 years of progressive experience in the resource sector, and has a proven track record working at all levels of the business. Before joining Trevali, he was the Chief Operating Officer of Vale Base Metals North Atlantic, where he held responsibility for the overall operating and financial performance of 16 mining and refining operations in four countries. He was also previously the President and COO of South32 Australia, overseeing 6 operations in Australia and Colombia. He has also served as Asset President of Aluminium Australia, Head of Group HSEC for BHP Billiton, President and COO of BHP Billiton’s Ekati Diamond Mine, Executive Vice President Mining and Concentrating for Lonmin Platinum. Ricus holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) from the University of Pretoria, has completed the Management Development Program from the University of Orange Free State, and holds an Advanced Certificate in Mine Ventilation from the Chamber of Mines.

Brendan Creaney is a business administration professional with 15 years of experience in the mining and construction industry with a focus on finance, capital allocation, mergers and acquisitions, investor relations, and strategy. Before joining Trevali he spent 7 years at Goldcorp holding various progressive roles ending his tenure as Director of Corporate Development and Value Assurance. Prior to Goldcorp positions were held at Barrick and Novagold advancing the development of projects. Mr. Creaney holds a Masters of Business Administration with a specialization in Finance from the University of Manchester and a Bachelors of Arts from the University of Victoria. 

DerekDu Preez

Derek du Preez brings over 25 years of experience working at some of the world’s largest and most complex mining operations, leading major digital transformation and innovation programs, championing industry-first applications of IoT and AI technologies and providing strong strategic guidance and technical expertise in relation to feasibility, planning and turnaround strategies to ensure optimal value for the business. Before joining Trevali, Derek was the Principal Consultant at AMC Consultants. Prior to that, he held the position of Director, Digital Transformation, North Atlantic at Vale Canada and Head of the Digital Delivery Centre at South32. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineer’s Certificate of Competency from South Africa, is a Technologist Member of the Institution of Engineers Australia in the Mechanical College, and is experienced in Agile Delivery, SCRUM and Design Thinking.

Steven Molnar

As Chief Legal Officer, Steven Molnar is responsible for all legal matters involving Trevali and its subsidiaries, in addition to providing leadership and direction on matters relating to corporate governance and enterprise risk management. Before joining Trevali, Steve practiced corporate and securities law at McCarthy Tétrault LLP, where he provided advice on a variety of matters and transactions including corporate governance, regulatory compliance and public company reporting, mergers, acquisitions and dispositions, equity and debt financings, joint ventures and other commercial arrangements in the mining industry. Steve holds a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School and a Bachelor of Arts from Simon Fraser University. He is a member of both the British Columbia and Ontario Bars.

David Schummer

Dave is a proven executive leader of large-scale mining companies with three decades of mining experience working in the U.S., Canada, Peru, Indonesia, West Africa, and the Middle East, where he has held operational roles with increasing levels of responsibility throughout his career.  Dave has held the role of Senior Vice President at Ma'aden Gold and Base Metals, Chief Operating Officer at Newgold and spent 22 years with Newmont Mining Corporation.  While at Newmont, Dave progressively moved into more senior roles, ultimately becoming the Senior Vice President, Africa.  Prior to his time in Africa, Dave was Newmont's Vice President of North American Operations, where he led a group of eight operating mines, including both open pit and underground operations. Dave holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Finance from Regis University in the United States.

Joanne Thomopoulos

Joanne Thomopoulos is an influential senior HR leader with over 15 years of direct leadership experience. Before joining Trevali, she spent over 10 years at BC Hydro and 8 years at BCLC where she championed key strategic HR initiatives that leveraged talent to maximize business efficiencies. She has led workforce redesign projects, developed performance management and talent development frameworks, and provided strategic guidance on mergers, acquisitions and integrations. She is a Chartered Professional in Human Resources, holds a Strategic Human Resources Management Graduate Certification, Advanced Certification in Management and a Diploma in Criminal Justice. She is also a certified coach and facilitator for Kouzes and Posner’s leadership practices.

Jill Gardiner

Ms. Gardiner is a professional corporate director and currently serves on the board of Capital Power Corporation and Hochschild Mining plc. Previously Ms. Gardiner spent over 20 years in the investment banking industry, most recently as Managing Director and Regional Head, British Columbia, for RBC Capital Markets. In her various roles in corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, and debt capital markets she provided strategic advice to, and helped raise capital for, numerous corporations with a focus on commodity-related, infrastructure and diversified industries. Ms Gardiner is the former Senior Project Manager at the Ontario Energy Board and lecturer at the University of Victoria in corporate finance and human resource management. She previously served as Board Chair of Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd. and as a director of the boards of Capstone Mining Corp., Parkbridge Lifestyle Community Inc., SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts, and Timber Investments. Ms. Gardiner holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Business Administration, both from Queen’s University.

Russell Ball is the Managing Director at QDBS Resources Inc. and the former Chief Executive Officer and a director and Executive Chairman of Calibre Mining Corp. Previously, Mr. Ball was Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Corporate Development of Goldcorp Inc., a role he assumed in March 2016 after initially joining Goldcorp Inc. in 2013 and serving as Executive Vice President of Capital Projects, Strategy and Corporate Development, including oversight of their primary growth projects. Prior to his role with Goldcorp Inc., he served in varying capacities for Newmont Mining Corporation, including Strategic and Business Planning, culminating with his appointment as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. He currently serves on the Board of Calibre Mining Corp. He is both a Chartered Accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of South Africa and a Certified Public Accountant in the USA.

Ms. Cote is Co-Head of Zinc Industrial Assets of Glencore International AG. She began her career as an exploration geologist for Noranda Inc. and transitioned thereafter into project management and technical services roles under Xstrata plc and Glencore. Ms. Cote holds a bachelor’s degree in Science (Geology) from the University of Quebec (1998), post graduate training in Geology at Laurentian University (2000) and an MBA from the University of Quebec (2008).

Jeane Hull

Ms. Hull has over 35 years of operational leadership and engineering experience, most notably holding the positions of Chief Operating Officer for Rio Tinto plc at the Kennecott Utah Copper Mine and Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer of Peabody Energy Corporation. Ms. Hull has also held numerous management engineering and operations positions with Rio Tinto and affiliates. Prior to joining Rio Tinto, she held positions with Mobil Mining and Minerals, and has additional engineering, environmental and regulatory affairs experience in the public and private sector. Ms. Hull is currently a director of Epiroc AB, Interfor Corporation and Pretium Resources Inc., and also serves on the Advisory Board for South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. A retired Registered Professional Engineer, Ms. Hull holds a Bachelor of Science (Civil Eng.) from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and a Master of Business Administration degree from Nova Southeastern University.

Dan Isserow

Dan Isserow is a Chartered Accountant with financial and business operations leadership experience and a successful track record of growing organizations across various business sectors, including introducing the Nando’s restaurant franchise to Canada and serving as its President and CEO from 1993 to 2012. He is currently the Co-Founder, President and Chief Financial Officer with Silica Ventures, a company focused on the expanding market for digital sign applications; with customers in Canada and the United States. He is a Chartered Accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of South Africa. He has also completed the ICD Directors’ Education Program (DEP).

Nick Popovic

Nick Popovic photo

Nick Popovic joined Glencore International A.G. in January 1992 as a Zinc and Lead Concentrates and Metals trader and is currently Head of Marketing and co-Industrial Lead (Zinc Smelters) for Glencore. He currently also serves as chairman of Kazzinc and is a board member of Compañia Minera Volcan SAA and Volcan S.A.A., said companies all being engaged in the extraction and production of zinc, lead, copper and precious metals. He has held postings in the UK, Russia, Kazakhstan and Switzerland, covering trading, production and managerial roles at both Glencore and its subsidiary companies. Mr. Popovic holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Cambridge.

Richard Williams

Richard Williams photo

Richard Williams currently serves as the Executive Chairman of Bunker Hill Mining Corp and is a former Chief Operating Officer at Barrick Gold Company and Barrick’s Executive Envoy to Tanzania (2014 to 2018). He has also served as Chief Executive Officer of the Afghan Gold and Minerals Company (2010 to 2014) and as a non-executive director of Gem Diamonds Limited, listed on the London Stock Exchange (2015 to 2018). In addition to his mining experience, Mr. Williams served as the Commanding Officer of the British Army’s Special Forces Regiment, the SAS. He has an MBA from Cranfield University, a Master’s Degree in Security Studies from Kings College London, and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from University College London. He is also on the Board of Canada’s Vimy Foundation, a charity with a mission to preserve and promote Canada’s First World War legacy, and London’s Mine and Money Conference.
